Athenian LawThere was a law in the city of Athens which gave to its citizens the power of compelling their daughters to marry whomsoever they pleased; for upon a daughter's refusing to marry the man her father had chosen to be her husband, the father was empowered by this law to cause her to be put to death

Society Roles

Men were in charge of the family and the house. Most men worked during the day as businessmen or farmers. When they were at home, they were treated with great respect. Even during dinner, the men laid on couches and were fed and entertained by the slaves while the women and children ate in another room. Men were given the most responsibility and, therefore, were considered the most important people in ancient Greece

Women didn’t have so many privileges in ancient Greece. They were not allowed to eat or sleep in the same room as men, go to the Olympics, or go into the marketplace or streets in the city. There most important tasks , aside from having children, were running the household and managing the slaves. Women in less wealthy households did not have slaves and had todo do all the housework themselves. In peasant households, the women were in charge of working the fields

Women in many Greek city states were expected to lead secluded lives, staying at home, spinning weaving and supervising the work of the slavesThere was a form of democracy in Athens, but it was available only to a limited section of the population, adult male Ahtenian-born citizens. Women , slaves and foreigners, did not have any participation in government.Sports were more violent than they are today, there were no team games, people participated as individuals, and there were no second prizes . Winning was everything.Ancient Greek Religion was very different from modern religion. Greeks believed in a variety of different gods and goddesses, they sacrificed animals and themselves to their gods to try and gain their approval

Women are free and respected, and have the same rights and power as men.Nowadays democracy is for everyone for instance, women can participate in the government.Modern society has another vision of life and honor, emphazasing the team work and the self care.Nowadays, greek society only believe in one true god. Their religion is called Greek Orthodox Church. Religions with smaller numbers of followers include Islam, Chatholicism, Evangelism and Hellenic Paganism.
