A Long Way Gone

A Long Way Gone Written By: Ishmael Beah

“Things changed rapidly in a matter of seconds and no one had any control over anything.” (29)“One of the unsettling things about my journey, mentally, physically, and emotionally, was that i didn’t know what i was going to do with my life. I felt that i was starting over and over again.” (69)“Sometimes we were asked to leave for war in the middle of a movie and we would come back hours later after killing many people and continue the movie as if we had just returned from intermission. We were always either at the front lines, watching a war movie, or doing drugs. There was no time to be alone or to think.” (124)“We cannot allow a civilian to talk to us like that… one of the boys stabbed his foot as we kicked him relentlessly.” (140)“When i was seven i had an answer to this question that made sense to me. I never discussed it with anyone, though, for fear of how my mother would feel. I concluded to myself that if i were the hunter, I would shoot the monkey so that it would no longer have the chance to put other hunters in the same predicament.” (218)

Come along on the jounrey of a life time following this lucky Sierra Leone boy. He loses his family, friends, and his sensibilty. There are cries, gunfire, torture, and time of despair.
