A Long Way Gone

Ishmael BeahA Long Way Gone

"Since we intended to return the next day, we didn't say goodbye or tell anyone where we were going. We didn't know that we are leaving home, never to return" (pg. 7)

Whenever I looked at rebels during raids, I got angrier, because they looked like the rebels who played cards in the ruins of the village where I had lost my family. So when the lieutenant gave orders, I shot as many as I could, but I didn't feel any better.p. 122

"The most difficult part of being in the forest was the loneliness. It became unbearable each day. One thing about being lonesome is that you think too much, esspecially when ther isn't much else you can do." (pg. 52)

The journey of losing your family and surviving by yourself can be a struggle. Finding food and avoiding rebels is one of the hardest things. This is the story that Ishmael tells.

"Some said it was Gasemu's fault that we didn't get to see our parents. Others said it wasn't, and that if it hadn't been for him, we would all be dead." (pg. 96)

"As soon as they started speaking, we would throw bowls, spoons, food, and beat them up." (pg. 138)
