Kansas-Nebraska Act:A proposal that divided the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase into two territories, Kansas and Nebraska, and allowed people in the territory to decide on slavery. The plan elimated the Missouri Compromise's restriction on slavery. However, some of the northerners were against it and believed it turning free land into a" dready region......inhabited by masters and slaves." Even the northerners opposed it, but the Democrats vote for it so the plan was signed into law in 1854

The South Secedes:After Aberham Lincoln said that slaver couldn't expand and it eventually would die out, the sourthern states considered to secedes from the Union. They thought if the states could voluntarily join the union the Union then they could leave the Union willingly. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. Their new constitution guaranteed citizens the right to own slaves.

Compromise of 1850: A plan that settled most issues between free and slave states. California was able to enter the Unio as a free state because of the Compromis of 1850. Also, it divided the Mexican Cession into two territories, Utah and New Mexico, where popular sovereignity get to decided if slavery were allow. The Compromise of 1850 affected Texas because the federal government agreed paid for its financial in return for give up its land claim in New Mexico.

Dred Scott Decision:Dred Scott was a slave of Dr. Emerson who sued for his freedom. At first, the Supreme Court stated that Dred was not a citizen so he don't have the right to file suit in federal court. Then Chief Justice Taney declared that Missouri Compromise restriction on slavery is unconstitutional. Becaus eof the Fifth Amendment, Congress had no right to ban slavery in any federal territory. After the decision, many sourtherners was excited,but the northerners was upset.

Election of 1860:In 1860 presidental election, Stephen Douglas, John C. Breckinridge, Johm Bell, and Aberham Lincoln were going against each other. Douglas, Breckinridge, and Bell was sure that Lincoln would not win. However, Aberham Lincoln won the election with a unified Republician Party behind him. The southerners was angered with the election results, and they thought they began to lose their national political power.

Fugitive Slave Act:An act that made it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas. This act let slaveholder to use testimony from white witnesses, but African American slaves accused of being fugitives can't testify. Commissioners that rejected a slaveholder's claim earned five dollars and one that return fugitives to its owner got ten dollars. The Fugitve Act angered the northerners because they don't like powers that the commissioners had.

The United States was divided into two, north and south, because slavery issues. After many conflicts and arguements, the South decided to suceded the Union.
