The September 11 attacks were a series of four cooridnated terroist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the U.S in NYC and the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area.

Veteran flight attendants alert ground personnel to the hijacking of Flight 11. They stay on the line for almost the entire time of the flight after its seizure by terrorists.



September 11, 2001 was a primary election day in New York City. Many police officers begin their days early at polling stations.

American Airlines Flight 11 takes off fourteen minutes behind its scheduled departure.

In an attempt to communicate with Flight 11, hijacker Mohammed Atta contacted air traffic control on accident. Minutes later, he made a second unintended transmission to ground control.

United Airlines Flight 93 departs Newark International Airport Flight 93 was scheduled to leave Newark at 8:00 am, within minutes of the other hijacked flights.

"Your attention, please, ladies and gentlemen. Building 2 is secure. There is no need to evacuate Building 2. If you are in the midst of evacuation, you may use the re-entry doors and the elevators to return to your office. Repeat, Building 2 is secure."



Hijackers crash Flight 175 into floors 77 to 85 of the World Trade Center's South Tower, killing everyone on the plane and hundreds inside the building. During its final nose dive, the plane lost altitude at a rate of approximately 5,000 feet per minute.

Rescuers locate PAPD Sgt. John McLoughlin and Officer William Jimeno in the debris of the World Trade Center. They free Officer Jimeno after three hours of dangerous tunneling work. Sgt. McLoughlin's rescue takes another eight.
