5th Grade - The Respiratory System

Primary function supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver it to all parts of the body.

Main Organs

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Why is this important?Because oxigen allows cells to make energy in order to function properly.

LungsThe lungs inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. The red blood cells are responsible for picking up the oxygen in the lungs and carrying the oxygen to all the body cells that need it. They carry the CO2 back to the lungs, where it is exhaled.

Tracheais sometimes called the windpipe. The trachea filters (cleans) the air we breathe and branches into the bronchi.

BrochiThe bronchi are two air tubes that branch off of the trachea and carry air directly into the lungs.

DiaphragmThe diaphragm has two main actions: -contraction: when it contracts it allows the lungs to expand and get full of air which brings oxygen into the body.-expantion: when it expands the lungs grow smaller and the air goes out allowing CO2 to leave the body.

AlveoliThis is where oxygen and CO2 are exchanged
