5 Themes of Geography
1. Location
Absolute Location:a point on a map or globe expressed as the intersection of lines of latitude and longitude.
For Example:Meredith College's absolute location isLatitude: 35.798977 Longitude: -78.688482
Relative Location: provides a location based on its relationship to other places.
For Example: The state of North Carolina is beside Tennessee, below Virginia and above South Carolina.
Dividing the world into smaller parts based on characteristics.
Formal Region: They have official boundaries, such as cities, states, counties, and countries.Ex: Great Smoky Mountains
Functional: are made up of a central place and surrounding areas affected by it. Often, this is a metropolitan area that consists of a major city and lots of smaller towns or cities that surround it.Ex: Atlanta
Vernacular regions are perceived regions, they have no formal boudaries.Ex: The South
Human characteristics include the cultural features of a place, from land use and architecture to the way they live and their beliefs to the food and folk ways to transportation and communication networks.
Describes the human and physical characteristics of a location.
Physical Characteristics include features such as beaches, mountains and animals and plant life in that place.
