4B Post Assesment

Zimbardo (Prison Experiment) - Being a senior and the team captain, I felt that I had more authority than what I really did. I was chosen to be team captain because of my leadership abilities and because everyone looked up to me as I was fair. Since I had been given additional authority, I felt that I could tell the underclassmen what to do on the soccer team, such as getting the balls or towels, when I should have been helping them do these tasks. I let the power of being the team captain and sense of authority control my actions.

Authority – My coach, Coach Hachen, is the authority figure on the team. Whatever he says goes. You do not ask any questions, you just do it. He commands obedience and he does not accept when people talk back to him or question him.

Fundamental Attribution Error – Half way through the season, one of the players started to practice poorly and not perform up to her usual standards. Everyone thought it was because she did not like the new coach. Therefore, because of her poor performance, the coaches benched her more and more each game. However, no one knew this player’s parents were going through a separation and this external factor was affecting her play.

Conformity – At the beginning of the game, our coach made a starting line up that we did not know how it would work. One of our teammates thought that the new positions would not work because it was something we tried in the game before and we lost. When everyone told her it will work, she was then confirmed because she got over it and went along with it and adjusted to what the rest of the team was thinking about, and we ended up winning the game.

Groupthink – If in practice, we run the play the same way every time, our minds will only know how to run the play the way we ran it in practice. There is one play on the field that when one of the forwards have the ball, then they pass it to the wing, and the forward runs around the other team’s defensive player and gets the pass from the wing

Asch (Line Experiment) – After every game, the team took a vote to see who would get the game ball for being the most valuable player for that game. At first, the coach did this verbally and asked each player who their choice was. After a couple of games, the coach noticed that the answers were generally the same and only one player was chosen, even though there could have been multiple MPVs for the game. Therefore, the coach started having the players write their choices on a slip of paper. When the players truly wrote their choices down on paper, there was more candidates for MVP then when they had to verbalize their choice. This was because the players did not feel the need to vote for someone because another person voted for that person.

Self-serving Bias – We have a girl on our team named Emily, she is very good but he is not a team player and many people do not like that about her. When we win a game, she will be like, “We won because of me. If it was not for me, y’all would have lost.” However, if we lose, he would be like, “It is all of your faults; we lost because y’all did not do good enough.” Even though Emily is a very good player, she is hard to deal with sometimes because she acts like this

Group Polarization – During home soccer games, our soccer team has very supportive fans. Our fans are there for one reason, to support us. Our group of fans’ attitudes is strengthened when a rival team and their fans come to our school. Because of the rivalry, the overriding attitude toward the opposing team makes our fans cheer louder when we are doing well or boo the opposing team when they do something well. Because our fans want us to beat the rival team, they come together as one group, thus producing a type of group polarization.

Milgram (Obedience Experiment) - Players are generally very obedient to their coaches and will sometimes continue to do what the coaches ask even though it may be wrong. An example of this would be when the coach tells you to trip, push, or bump another player during a corner kick. The player would probably do this because the coach said to do it even though it could potentially hurt the opposing player.

Obedience – My teammates and I are obedient to our coach. We do not talk back or argue with him during practice or games, even if we do not quite agree with him and understand the decision he made. There have been many times in practice where he would stop practice because we did something wrong and make us run. Even if we thought we were doing it well and did not feel the need to have to run, we run anyways. We do this because we are obedient towards him and know that he wants the best for us and he is the person in authority.
