Excess secretion of hydrochloric acid, genetic predisposition and psychological stress are important contributing factors in formation and worsening of duodenal ulcers which cause people with gastric problems to feel uncomfortable in their upper abdomen.

Our stomach normally produces acid to help with the digestion of food ad to kill bacteria. This acid is corrosive, so some cells on the inside lining of the stomach and duodenum produce a natural mucus barrier which protects the lining of the stomach and duodenum. There is usually a balance between the amount of acid that is made and the mucus defense barrier. An ulcer may develop if there is an alteration in this balance, allowing the acid to damage the lining of the stomach or duodenum which causes our stomachs to hurt.

what causes our stomachs to hurt when we have gastric problems?

Chronic use of anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin causes people to feel uncomfortable too.

Injury of the gastric mucosal lining and weakening of the mucous defences.

Cigarette smoking also cause ulcer formation and ulcer treatment failure
