What is Atkins Diet?
Atkins Diet:
Beneficial orDetrimental
It is officially called the Atkins Nutritional Approach and it is a low-carbohydrate diet to switch the body's metabolism from metabolizing glucose as energy over to converting stored body fat to energy. This process, called ketosis, begins when insulin levels are low; in normal humans, insulin is lowest when blood glucose levels are low (mostly before eating). Reduced insulin levels induces lipolysis which consumes fat to produce ketone bodies. However, there are arguments that consuming lesser carbohydrate has no such metabolic advantage- Caloric carbohydrates (e.g. glucose, starch) increase blood sugar after consumption- Net carbohydrate = Total carbohydrate - fiber - sugar alcohols
Disadvantages of Atkins Diet - May contribute to osteoporosis and kidney stones- During ketosis, bad breath, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, insomnia and nausea may occur- Leg cramps during induction phase- Headaches due to caffeine withdrawal for some individuals- Avoidance of high-fibre food may cause constipation- Difficult for vegetarians to carry out- Due to high consumption of saturated fats, high cholesterol and coronary heart disease may be experienced - Large increase in glycotoxin methylglyoxal may lead to blood vessel and tissue damage- People will not learn about the principle of having a balanced and healthy diet to avoid diseases
- Rapid weight loss- Helps prevent cardiovascular disease- Lowers the low density lipoprotein cholesterol and increases the amount of high density lipoprotein ('good' cholesterol)- Insulin resistance is better compared to those following a low-fat, calorie restricted diet- Encourage people to restrict processed carbohydrates and alcohol- Help men lose "beer bellies"
The Atkins Diet is a good way to lose weight in a short amount of time, but it is not the best way. Even though it allows people to lose weight fast without cutting down on food they like, it is harmful in the long run. It is harmful to many internal organs, daily activities may not be able to be carried out properly. A balanced diet and daily exercise is the best way to ensure good health and weight. Thus, the atkins diet is detrimental and should be avoided.
