I estimate Digital Natives to spend between 30% - 40% of their day using technology.

Module 3: Who are the Digital Natives and the Digital Immigrants?

Digital Natives are students of today. From early on they have been exposed to technology. They are "natives" to technology.

Digital Natives have different thinking patterns. They like to recieve information fast and can multi task. They learn best when they are networked. Digital Natives have little patience for traditional learning. Their attention span is much shorter so things need to happen quick.

Digital Immigrants are like myself. I was born before technology became huge, but I now use technology. Some are more tech savvy than others.

Digital Immigrants are like immigrants, they still have an accent. They have learned to adapt, but technology is usually what they go to second. It is not their first choice. Digital Immigrants have more patience for traditional learning. They do not multi task and prefer basic forms of learning.

I would estimate Digital Immigrants' careers are about 50% technology related. In comparison, I would estimate around 90% technology related careers for Digital Natives.

Marketers rather than educators are reaching students' minds through technology. They use social media and visuals to advertise their products. Teachers need to find ways to reach the minds of Digital Natives.

I enjoyed reading about the two terms. I had never heard of Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants before. It was interesting relating Digital Natives to my students and how they learn. It's another remider that I need to continue to find ways to deliver content through technology. A difficult part of this assignment was estimating percentages. I'm not sure how far off my estimates are and it was difficult finding information specifically related to some of the questions.
