Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake.

Earthquakes are measured by a scale called a Richter scale made by a man names Charles F . Richter.The Richter magnitude is calculated from the amplitude of the largest seismic wave recorded for the earthquake.
