3 BRANCHES OF U.S. GOVERNMENT
LEGISLATIVE BRANCH
EXECUTIVE BRANCH
JUDICIAL BRANCH
CONGRESS
SENATE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
PRESIDENT
There are a total of 435 representatives in the House. Each member represents an area of the state, known as a congressional district. The number of representatives is based on the number of districts in a state. Therefore, states with larger populations have more representation than states with smaller populations.
Senators belong to the legislative branch of the government, which is the part of the government that makes laws. A senator's job is to represent the people living in his or her state in the United States Senate. Part of this job is to write and vote on new laws called “bills.”
The President is the head of the executive branch, which makes laws official. The President is elected by the entire country and serves a four-year term. The President approves and carries out laws passed by the legislative branch. He appoints or removes cabinet members and officials.
VICE PRESIDENT
SUPREME COURT
The Judicial (joo DISH ul) branch of our government is the Supreme Court and other federal courts. Their job is to explain the laws of this country under the Constitution. They must decide if laws are constitutional (do not go agaUSCISt the Constitution).
