22nd Amendment

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

Proposed on March 24, 194736 states voted to ratify2 voted to rejectAdopted on Feb. 27, 1951

This was proposed after F.D.R. died in the beginning of his forth term. In Dewey's campaign the next presidental election he said, "four terms, or sixteen years, is the most dangerous threat to our freedom ever proposed

Other presidents including Ulysses Grant and Thoedore Roosevelt, in the past tried for more than two terms but failed with getting the party nomination.

History/Background of the Amendment

To me, this amendment is meant to limit the number of terms to help prevent the posibility of a monarchy or anything of that nature
