Prohibition refers to laws that ban the drinking of alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages include beer, gin, rum, vodka, whiskey, and wine. This is significant because it sparked a market in bootlegging and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Babe Ruth lived from 1895-1948. He was the first great home run hitter is the history of baseball. Babe Ruth made baseball much for enjoyable for the average citizen by establishing homers as a normal part of the game. Ruth’s lifetime batting average was .342 which would be a record holder for many years to come. This is significant because it shows the exuberant side of the 1920s.

Edward Kennedy also known as Duke Ellington was one of the most popular jazz musicians in the 1920s. Kennedy also appeared in Broadway shows and in numerous movies. He accomplished one other major issue: segregation and or racism. He shattered some racial barriers by preforming in theaters and hotels that had once forbidden African Americans. This is significant because it shows the power of talent and motivation.

The Ford Model T was one of the most influential inventions of the 1900’s. Ford was the first to use conveyor belts and assembly lines to make production faster and less expensive, in addition he only made the Model T in Black to make production as efficient as possible. This is significant because now the average American can afford a car which allows a faster and more enjoyable transportation experience for the consumer.

The lost generation is a term that has come to define a group of American writers who lived and rose to a high status in Europe during the 1920’s. This group included Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, E. E. Cummings, John Dos Passos, Thornton Wilder, and Hart Crane. All of these famous writers helped today’s style of literature by incorporating their own twists on writing.

Louis Armstrong lived from1901-1971. Louis Armstrong is arguably the best jazz musician of all time. His two favorite instruments were the trumpet and the cornet. Armstrong was also one of the first musicians to scat sing. This is significant because it shows that the country is starting to forget about the war and have fun again.

Al Capone is one of the most notorious American gangsters of all time. Capone lived a surprising 48 years from 1899-1947. He was known as scarface because his left cheek was once slashed in a knife fight. Capone is mainly known for St. Valentine’s Day massacre, one of the bloodiest days in the 1920’s. This is significant because it shows that the U. S. is still somewhat corrupt.

The 1920’s advertising scheme was all about installments. Installments allow poor people to buy expensive things by paying a small charge each month until they have paid of the entire expense. The only catch was interest. This is significant because it shows the post-war economy slowly starting to thrive.

The 1900’s were an exciting time is the math and science world. Many new inventions were created such as the zeppelin, the submarine, the thermionic valve, the vacuum, the automatic tea-maker, the safety razor, the electric toaster, the electric kettle, the powered airplane, the radio, the turbine, and the first practical automobile. The main advantages of all of these inventions were that they made work easier, faster, and more productive, though some inventions were purely made for entertainment and pleasure. The other main theme is automation. Automation raised profit margin and helped stimulate the post-war economy. These automatic machines were mainly put to use in agriculture scenarios. The 1900’s were an exciting time in the math and science world.
