The Cay

The Cay The Cay, by Theodore Taylor, is about a boy named Phillip and a 70 year old man named Timothy. The setting of this story takes place during World War two in the late 1930’s.The book mainly takes place on a cay, but also on the ocean while they are on the ship. Germany is invading Curacao, an small island off in the distance. Phillip and his mother are forced to flee from their home and they decide to go to the United States. While they’re on their journey in a boat, a German vessel attacks their ship with a torpedo and causes it to sink. During this deadly, scary attack, Phillip gets hit in the head and loses consciousness. He says, “I was thrown from the top bunk and suddenly found myself on my hands and knees on the deck.” When he wakes up, he is puzzled to find himself on a raft with Timothy, a black man from the West Indies who was on the ship and rescued him from the sinking ship and saved his life. All the other people from the ship were no where to be found, including his mother. While they are on the raft in the ocean he raft tips over and Timothy falls off, crying for help. After he falls off, Phillip attempts to save him by jumping in and finds him deep inside the water. “In wild excitement, Timothy stumbled up and fell overboard.” Phillip pulls him back into the raft and rescues Timothy. While they are traveling on the raft to an unknown destination Phillip starts to lose eyesight and loses all of it by the end of the book. After they reach an island called the cay,Timothy teaches Phillip how to survive on his own. In the end of the book, a couple of hurricanes hit the Cay, and the two go through a rough time with no one else around. Were they able to survive? The theme of this book is that there is always someone to help you when you need it. When the war started, he was one of the lucky ones to escape from the island. After the ship that Phillip was on was attacked he felt scared and alone. His mother was gone as well, but there was still somebody to help him. “I felt seasick and worried crawled to the side of the raft. to vomit.” Even though Phillip was scared, Timothy was always there to help him. When the hurricane hit, Timothy made sure he would stay alive, by tying him to the tree and sacrificing his own life for Phillip. This shows that someone is always looking after you when you’re scared and alone. This book taught me how to trust people because when Phillip was blind, he had no choice but to trust Timothy. He learned how to trust people. This shows that you should try to trust people when they are trying to help you. This book is historical fiction because the book takes place during World War Two and takes place during an accurate historical setting. This book is fictional because it never actually took place, even though it was historical. My opinion of the book is that the book was frightening in some parts because they had to face many difficulties and learn how to survive on their own. I could never survive for even one day on a raft by myself. I think the book is also very touching because of the connections that Phillip and shared with Tim, even without his parents being there with him. It was also sad because Phillip became blind and got separated from his mom. I also liked learning about World War Two and finding out more about how to survive on the island. I liked reading this book because it was historical fiction and it showed me a lot about history, and surviving in the ocean and on a island. It also was a very emotional story, with the struggles Phillip had to endureMain Characters Phillip - Phillip is one of the main characters in The Cay. He is a 12 year old boy who became separated from his mother on a ship heading to the United States. After that, he found himself on a raft with a black man named Timothy who helped him survive. Phillip became blind after he tried to save Timothy on the raft. He is a brave and intelligent boy because he was on a raft with a stranger a learned how to survive on his own.Timothy - Timothy is also one of the main characters in The Cay. He is a 70 year old black man from the West Indies. He was a worker on the ship and scared Philip because he had learned that black people, “Were different than the rest of us.” Timothy and Philip later learned to trust each other. Timothy knew a lot about surviving and he used his knowledge to teach Phillip. Timothy is a resourceful and helpful man because he built a house on the cay using his natural resources and he didn’t waste anything. He is helpful because he saved Phillip and he took great care of him.
