1st Amendment Yanling Liu

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

First Amendment

People should be free in religion and have rights to say whatever they want. Also, protest and parade shouldn't be forbbidened. People have rights to ask government for explanation when there are complaints.

On august 16th, 2014, Missouri governer Jay Nixon imposed a midnight to 5 a.m. curfew in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson where black teenager Michael Brown was shot to death by a white police officer a week ago. The curfew was carried out due to the harm and danger protesters gave to the community as stores were robbed and chaos was everywhere.

According to the 1st amendment, people have rights to protest and parade for justice. However, how about when the community is endangered and threatened by the outrageous actionof protestors or when the situation is out of control because of the parade? The government of Missouri was worried about the safety of citizens so that the curfew was issued. Although it should not have happened according to the first amendment, it was necessary for controling the situation as people were going way too far: stores were broken and stolen and store owners were forced to secure themselves by holding gun in front of the store. The first amendment secured people's freedom in speech and action, but it should not be used in wrong way and people should be rational when asking government for explanation or acting opposed to issues.
