"On coins, on stamps, on the covers of books, on banners, on posters, and on the wrapping of a cigarette packet-everywhere. Always the eyes watching you and enveloping you. Asleep or awake, working or eating, indoors or out of doors, in bath or in bed- no escape. Nothing was your own exept the few cubic centimeters inside your skull."

The book 1984 by George Orwell, Is a story written in 1949, based on George Orwells fortelling of what it will be like in the future. The protagonist of this story is a man named Winston Smith who works at the Records department in the Ministry of Truth. There are 4 Ministrys of which the government was divided. The ministry of Truth, Peace, Love, and Plenty. The majority of the people of Oceania are in constant fear of the telescreans, which are large pannels by which the people of the inner party can see and hear there every movement. Winston hates the system of government, and the people who controll it. At the beguinning of the book, Winston talks of the dark haired girl, whom he despises for being a woman. Soon after, she secretly passes him a note which says i love you. Winston evidently met up in a secret spot, and fell in lover with her. Having relations with anyone is very illigal, and punishable by being forced to work at a labor camp, or even death. A inner party member named O'Brien told Winston to meet him at his house, so he can give him a copy of the current dictionary. Winston had a feeling that O'Brian was a member of the Brotherhood, which is the group of people who are trying to overthrow Big Brother (The head member of their government), and wanted Winston to join them. A few days later, him and the dark haired girl, named Julia, went to O'Brien's house. O'Brien asked them questions about what they are willing to do in The Brotherhood, and a few days later Winston recieved a black book which was the handbook for everyone on The Brotherhood to read. Winston and Julia were hiding in their secret apartment reading the handbook, when the police broke in the windows and doors and arrested them for attempting to overthrough Big Brother. After many countless days in his cell, he is finally escorted out by O'Brien. O'Brien anounces that he was never a member of The Brotherhood, but actually a police officer, trying to control everyone to love Big Brother. Winston is then tortured and beaten untel he does the comands of O'Brien, one of which is answering 2+2=5. He is then taken to the mysterious room 101. O'Brien explains that room 101 is the worst thing in the world, but it varies from person to person. Winston is tied to a cair, and has a a cage strapped to his face, containing two wild rats. O'Brien threatened to open the door to the cage relesing the rats onto Winstons face, but just as he was about to pull the lever Winston screamed "Do it to Julia!" This was a enourmous betrail of Julia, but it was successful for stopping O'Brien. Julia did not have to enour the rats, and both of them were relesed soon after. They did meet after this, agreeing to meet again, but their love could not continue.

For me as a slow reader, it was very difficult to start this book. It uses a very large vocabulary, and has a certain theme that you have to really get into. Once I read on in 1984, I really enjoyed it! The part of the book that I loved most wasthe qoutes!George Orwell is a beautiful writer, the majority of what he wrote in the book 1984 was sort of dark and depressing, but that made it even more beautiful. As the book goes on, I felt as though Winston and Julia are going to live happily ever after, and take down Big Brother. But that isdefinatly not how it goes. I really like how I didnt anticipate what was going to happen next. This is very difficult for me because I can usually expect what is going to happen at the end. I would definatly recomend this book to any one who likes mystery, and fiction. I think I am going to read 1984 again in the near future, because over all, I thought it was a great tale of love & hope.Protagonist:Winston SmithAntagonist:The Party.Foil:JuliaDinamic Charictor:Winston SmithStatic Charictor:Syme

"We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness."

"It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words."

"You asked me once,' said O'Brien, 'What was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world."
