[2015] Courtney Belanger: 1984

Setting

1984George Orwell

Six WordStory

Much like the holocaust this book outlines government control and brainwashing. The control at concentration camps were much like the tourture they put Winston through to make him believe what they wanted. "A Party member is expected to have no private emotions and no respites from enthusiasm. He is supposed to live in a continuous frenzy of hatred of foreign enemies and internal traitors..."(174).

This story takes place in London, in a nation called Oceania. The time period of this book was 1984, which reflects the name of the title. "this was London, chief city of Airstrip One, itself the third most populous of the provinces of Oceania. He tried to squeeze out some childhood memory that should tell him whether London had always been quite like this"(7).

Character Description

Review

Courtney BelangerPeriod 711/25/15

While the theme of the book was clear, at first it was confusing. I enjoyed George Orwell's writing style it was descriptive yet to the point. Of the three characters described below they were all very different in their personality and views related to the Party. The plot was not your typical love story which was sad, unexpected, and interesting. The pace had a steady incline but some unnecessary sidetrail because of the lack of correlation to the novel. Over all I would rate this novel four out of five stars.

World Connection

Controlling government makes rebels rise together.

Winston Smith" he had set his features into the expression of quiet optimism which it was advisable to wear when facing the telescreen" (8). Winston is 39 years old, small frail figured, paranoid and is against totalitarian control. He follows the government but takes risks such as trusting O'Brien which leads him to being caught by the Party. He also had a secret love affair with Julia and became a rebel against the government. Winston was broken down by the government.

Julia"Don't go out into the open. There might be someone watching. We're all right if we keep behind the boughs"(102).Attractive young woman who acted boldly by sneaking a love note to Winston. Julia changed from the innocent civilian to a rebel that pushed too far and became broken.

O'Brien"You have had thoughts of deceiving me,That was stupid. Stand up straighter. Look me in the face"(232).Portly guy and member of the inner Party who tricked Winston and brainwashed him.
