"After one year from the ratification of article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors, within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage puporses is hereby prohibited."

in the house the vote was 282 to 128. Democrats voting 141 in favor and 64 in opposition. The republican voting 137 in favor and 62 in opposition.

46 out of 48 states ratified this admendment.

The 18th amendment was passed because there was a belief that there was direct link between alcohol and many antisocial behaviors, like child abuse and domestic violence. There was also a belief that alcohol had a negitive impact on labor productivity.
