1812 War

While France and Britain were at war with each other. America chose neutrality. Not favoring any side, america continued business as usual exporting and importing goods. Until Britain and France began to block and invade American merchant vessels coming in and out of each country. Britain began to force American sailors to join the British Navy. This event turned American citizens into warhawks. Except for Federalists because they opposed war.

Cause and Effect

The war of 1812 was caused by the impressment of American sailors by the British, interference with American trade (blockades), and the arming of indians. The effects of the war were increased nationalism, the demise of the Federalist party, and the Treaty of Ghent.

Why was the War of 1812 called the Second War of Independence

Because the Americans were fighting against a British invasion. And because of impressment and the taking over of American merchant vessels by the British.

The War of 1812

Background

Your text here

On a rainy September 13, 1814, British warships sent a downpour of shells and rockets onto Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, relentlessly pounding the American fort for 25 hours. The bombardment, known as the Battle of Baltimore, came only weeks after the British had attacked Washington, D.C., burning the Capitol, the Treasury and the President's house. At dawn of September 14, 1814, a man named Francis Scott Key saw the American flag, from a boat, on the fort declaring an American victory. He wrote the Star-Spangled banner while still aboard a boat.
