Hydraulic Mining

In the late 1800s, mining companies developed hydraulic mining to remove large quanities of earth and process it for minerals.

Hydraulic mining came from ancient Roman techniques using water to excavate soft deposits underground.

The nozzle connected to the water jets is called a "monitor".

The first form was used near Nevada City during the California Gold Rush.

It caused major flooding that flooded cities and towns, like in Sacramento Valley.

The main application of hydraulic mining was to construct paths and canals that would free water from the high mountain ranges and store the water into ponds.
