Why Do Students Need to Know This?

Histograms are used to summarize large amounts of information to be compared. Originally developed for quality control.

These are best used for comparing information. Most adults will see bar graphs on utility bills showing past use.

Fun to look at and make, Pictographs are often the first graph learned by students. It is common for one picture to represent more than one object as shown to the right.

These are often used as an image of increase or decrease overtime. In this example, parents would see a graph of their child's growth compared to the national averages.

Pie Charts or graphs are used to compare many items using percentages. In this case the amount of water used in different places in the house.
