Database vs. World Wide WebOnce you have selected your topic and created a list of search terms, you are ready to look for your information.Web:The web has vast amounts of information on it. It is unlimited and freely accessible. The web has various sources some of which are credible and others are not. Information on the web is uncontrolled and therefore you would have to evaluate the reliablity and usefulness of the information.Databases:Use of most databases are not free and require a subscription. The content is controlled and has been evaluated as credible by the provider. Databases include newspaper and journal articles as well as images and charts. They have research tools that help you refine your search and produce better search results.

Enter your search terms to find information on your topic. Remember to use a Boolean search to get the best results.

To begin go to the TVDSB home page. Click on Students and select Elementary Resources from the drop down menu. On the resources page click on the Research Databases icon. You will now see several icons for various databases. Select the database that will best meet the needs of your research topic. Enter the password given to you by the teacher and begin your search.

While reading the information take down jot notes on important points or answers to your research questions.
