The Water Cycle

TheWater Cycle

Core Standard4th Grade ScienceStandard 1: Students will understand that water changes states as it moves through the water cycle. Objective 1: Describe the relationship between heat energy, evaporation, and condensation of water on earth. Objective 2: Describe the water cycle.

step 1EVAPORATION

Evaporation is simply changing a liquid to a gas by applying energy. In the water cycle the sun's heat warms the ocean surface and changes the liquid water into water vapor, a gas. The water vapor rises into the atmosphere.

step 2CONDENSATION

Condensation is the process of changing a gas to a liquid. As watervapor cools water droplets form. They collect together as the atmosphere becomes saturated and clouds form.

step 3PRECIPITATION

The water droplets in the atmosphereget bigger as more water particles jointogether. The droplets soon become so big that the force of gravity is stronger than the air currents holding them. Thewater falls from the atmosphere. This iscalled precipitation and may come inthe form of snow, rain, sleet, or hail.

Step 4RUN OFF

Runoff is precipitation that did not getabsorbed into the soil. It makes its way from the ground surface into places where water collects. These placesinclude lakes, seas, and oceans. Theheating of these bodies of water by thesun will start the water cycle over again. T
