The Stanford Prison Experiment

Phillip Zombardo, the principle investigator, wanted to know if the power of the sutuation could override a person's good nature. Ultimately, he found that an intense situation could indeed make people treat each other in terrible ways. This experiment is as influential as it is controversial.

The Stanford Prison Experiment is famous for showing just how cruel humans can be in the wrong situation. Participants quickly adopted their experimental roles as guards and prisoners; soon the guards started harassing and berating the prisoners. Several prisoners, after suffering injustices, demanded to exit the study.
