Savannah

A savanna is a rolling grassland scattered with shrubs and isolated trees, which can be found between a tropical rainforest and desert biome.

Savannah is subjected to regular wildfires due to the dry climate and the human intervention.

Interesting Facts

Weather and Climate

There are many types of grasses in the savanna, such as Rhodes grass, red oats grass and lemon grass. They can go dormant in the dry season and grow rapidly in the wet season. The trees, like the baobab tree, also have deep roots, blubs and thick bark to help them preserve water during the dry season.

Life in Savannah

Animals in the Savanna biome include elephants, zebras, horses, and giraffes etc. Most of the animals migrate during the dry season, and only small mammals survive the drought. Different grazers&herbivores provide a wide range of food for carnivores, like lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals and hyenas.

Animals

There are only two seasons in the Savannah biome, a very long hot season and a very wet season

The soil of the savanna is porous, with rapid drainage of water. It has only a thin layer of humus (the organic portion of the soil created by partial decomposition of plant or animal matter) to provide vegetation with nutrients. Most of the soil is infertile, only allwing wild plants to grow.
