Onomatopoeia – use of words to imitate natural sounds

Metaphor – implied comparison achieved through a figurative use of words.

Simile – an explicit comparison of two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Slang – expressions used to create bonds and at times exclude others.

Oxymoron – apparadox achieved by the juxtaposition of words which contradict one another.

Assonance – repetition of the same vowel sound in words close to each other.

Analogy – a comparison between something familiar and something unfamiliar.

Personification – attribution of personality to an impersonal thing.

Paradox – an assertion seemingly opposed to common sense, but that may have some truth in it.

Euphemism – substitution of a least non-offensive expression for a meaning that might be harsh or unpleasant.

Hyperbole – exaggeration for emphasis or for rhetorical effect.

Metonymy – substitution of one word for another which it suggests.

Diction – the choice and use of words.
