pointe shoes

Pointe shoes are made out of: fabric, glue, satin, hard leather, ribbons, elastic, and cardboard in the toe. Pointe shoes do not have a heel like normal street shoes but have a leather sole.

"Pointe shoes make ballet dancing look magical and even daring. They create an illusion of lightness and give a sense that the ballerina is floating on air." (Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre)

No one knows for sure who invented the first modern pointe shoes. Some people say it was Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova.

"Maria Taglioni was the first ballerina that we know of to dance on pointe in the early 1830s, but the method probably began earlier. Taglioni and her contemporaries stuffed the toes of their soft shoes with starch and other materials, but soon Italian cobblers made harder shoes for them using paper, burlap and satin. This prototype evolved into the modern pointe shoe." (Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre)

No one really knows who invented the first pointe shoes. A possible answer is, pointe shoes were custom made by a cobbler according to the wishes of the dancer. It does not seem that pointe shoes were "invented" by a manufacturer and bought by dancers in retail, but rather an experiment of trial and error, continually refined and reworked, as the art form was being created.

MARIA TAGLIONI

Pointe shoes are specially-made shoes worn by ballerinas to allow them to dance on the tips of their toes.
