Ozone Layer Depletion

What is ozone depletion? It is simply the wearing out of the amount of ozone in the atmosphere. The ozone layer protects the earth from the suns UV Rays. If the ozone layer is depleted by human action, the effects on the planet could be catastrophic.

Ozone Layer Depletion

CausesThe ozone layer is being destroyed by Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). They are used to manufacture great varieties of products such as air conditioners, refrigerators, spray cans and foam food containers.

Solutions to reduce ozone depletion1. Stop using products with CFCs.2. Follow the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle3. Use ozone-friendly products.4. Inform family and friends about Ozone Depletion and ways to help.

How does ozone deplete? It begins when CFCs get into the stratosphere. Ultra violet radiation from the sun breaks up these CFCs. This action releases Chlorine atoms. Chlorine reacts with Ozone, starting a chemical cycle that destroys the good ozone in that area. One chlorine atom can break apart more than 100,000 ozone molecules.

ConsequencesDepletion of the ozone layer affects humans, animals and plants. This typically results from higher UV levels reaching us on earth. Research that high levels of UV Rays cause non-melanoma skin cancer.
