Of Mice and Men
Thus, George understood that Lenny needed to be taken care of and he never played jokes any more.Carlson, another worker, complains about Candy’s dog, who smells bad. He says that he could shoot the dog in the back of the head and he wouldn’t feel it. Most people in the bank house seem to agree with Carlson, so he went out with the dog and kills him for the sheer sadness of the old Candy.Crooks, an old black man, comes in saying that Lenny is playing with the puppies taking them away from their mother. After having killed the dog, Carlson comes in and avoids talking about what he has done. He is cleaning the gun when Curley gets into the house asking for his wife and realises that Slim is not there. George says that Slim is in the barn, then Curley rushes there. Some of them go behind him in case there is a fight if Curley catches Slim with his wife.“George, Lennie and Candy stay in the house. They talk about the farm they could own if they get the money. The farm of their dreams would have 10 acres, a windmill, a little shack, a chicken house, an orchard, apple and peach trees, and for the sake of Lenny, lots of rabbits. Candy asks if they know such a place and how much it would be. George feels defensive so Candy explains he is old so he might be unemployed in the future and he has saved some money, so they could buy the farm if they earn the salary of one more month. When the rest of the workers return from the barn, Curley sees Lenny laughing and he gets angry and tries to punch Lenny’s nose. In his defence Lenny grabs Curley’s hand and unwillingly breaks his hand.George gets worried they might be fired and the workers agree to say Curley breaks his hand in the machine, so people will not laugh at him. This is a good solution for Curley because he is a boxer and at the eyes of the others he couldn’t be seen as if one of his workers has beaten him.
The next evening, it is Saturday, when the other guys are in the town, Lenny goes to the stable buck where Crooks lives. He is the only one who goes there because Crooks is black. Curley’s wife comes in looking for her husband. As they ask her to leave, she gets angry saying she needs to talk with somebody. On Sunday afternoon Lenny goes to the barn to see the puppies. Curleys wife goes there too and sees him hiding something. Lennie explains that he needs to buy ... because the puppy is dying. She tries to console him but he refuses because George warned him not to talk with her. Nevertheless he keeps on talking saying he loves rabbits because he likes softs things. She says she understands and invites him to talk with her. Lennie tries to touch her hair but he is rude so she gets angry and asks him to go away. But Lenny can't stop. She shouts, so he grabs her mouth, shakes her and accidentally breaks “her neck. She lies and when Lennie realises what he has done, he remembers what George has said to him.Candy is the first to see Curleys wife and what Lenny did. He says Curley will linch Lenny, and suggests to leave the farm together. George says they must do as if it never happened. All the guys come to the barn and immediately know who kill Curleys wife. Carlson comments his gun is missing and that Lenny must have taken it.George knows that there is nothing he can do. He has to go with the others.Lenny goes back to the pond where George had told him to go if he were in trouble, and hides in the bushes. He sees aunt Clara and a rabbit who tells him he has never taken care of rabbits …George gets to the pond and talks to Lenny. He says that the other guys don't have any family to take care of them, but they have each other. Lenny wants to listen “about the farm they will have. George comforts Lennie by telling about the farm house, the rabbits … while he asks him to take off his hat.He takes off Carlson’s gun and when Lenny is daydreaming about the farm, he shoots his friend on the back of the head. All the other guys see George shooting Lenny. Slim tells George he has done the right thing. Now, George needs a drink.
I feel that “Of Mice and Men” is a special book. I could say it is a story about loneliness, friendship, hope, as well as love.
Steinbeck’s writing style delighted me.
“The story depicts the 30s in the USA, a decade of unemployment, a grey time, showing people’s mood of sadness which overflies all through the novel.
Yet ,the story tells us about the hope that they would overcome these difficult moment and get their dreams come true, which is clearly shown as Lennie and George dream of their own farm house.
I found the way Steinbeck describes the characters amazing, as well as the places where they move. I can see the old man, Candy, his ship dog, and of course Lenny and George, the pond, the stable buck, also the furniture in the house. I was able to dream and to suffer with them.
I find this book unforgettable, and I feel myself richer and happy to have had the possibility to share it in class.
I have enjoyed reading since I was very young. It was more than a hobby. I considered books as my friends. Louisa May Alcott, Emilio Salgari, Marc Twain, Charles Dickens. The bed was my favourite place to read and I spent hours and hours reading. For a shy young woman as I was it represented a way to take me out of the world and, as I see it now, to avoid socialised.Them, came the time of romanticist, and I fall in love with romantic novels. As time went by books became part of my life, and I couldn't do without them.I am very fond of history and thanks to reading I have learnt about places, people, behaviours, habits, thoughts, philosophy. At least I was able to travel around the world.
This book is about loneliness and friendship. The story is about two migrant workers, and it is set in Salinas, California. During the 30s the country was living the great depression, and lots of men walked along the country looking for work.“The two main characters of the novel, George and Lennie, are unusual because most of the workers travel alone but they are going together. Also they are very different from each other. George is small and protective, while Lennie is tall, big, and mentally disabled. They travel all day long, they’re coming from a farm where they have been fired because Lennie, who is always attracted by red colour, touched a girl in a red dress. She screamed and said he wanted to rape her, so workers wanted to lynch Lenny. Now they are fugitives.George gives Lenny a speech and says that if he gets in trouble in the new work he should go the pond and hide in the bushes. The next day they get to the ranch, where as the boss tells them, they will buck barley.Candy, an old man with an old dog comes to the place Candy, also does Curley, the bossson, who makes some questions, but acts like a jerk. After he leaves, Candy explains Curley is a boxer and doesn't like Lennie because Curley is not as big as him. Also, he warns George and Lennie about Curleys wife who flirts with everyone, specially Slim.A little while later Candys wife comes looking for conversation but they refuse to talk with her. After working all day George plays cards in the bunk house with Slim, who is the most respected guy in the ranch. Slim gives Lenny a puppy, and George explains that since aunt Clara died, he takes care of him and that he used to play lots of jokes on Lenny, and one day he jumped Lenny into a river, he doesn't know how to swim and almost drowned.
