Imagery in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

I chose this from page 153 because he's describing over and over the same thing, but each time he says it it's like the realization of what he's saying is being etched into the listeners mind.

".. the pit is prepared, the fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to recieve them; the flames do now rage and glow."

I chose this one because you can imagine the heat from the flames and the anger in your mind as he says it.

".. the devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them.."

"..It is nothing but his mere pleasure that keeps you from this moment swallowed up in everlasting destruction."

I picked this because I could completely imagine falling and having nothing to grab onto, and his scare tactics by describing these things really do make you think.

"In short, they have no refuge, nothing to take hold of..."

I chose this because I could imagine the bow and arrow and the arrow being pulled back ready to plunge through the air.

"The bow of God's wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow..."

I picked this one because again I can imagine what he's saying and applying it as if I was so close to the edge and I was dangling, and having someone else in the power over whether I fell or not.

A. Are the images persuasive? Why or why not?I would say they are, because even if someone doesn't believe, the idea of what he's saying is scary.B. What is Edwards' purpose in writing this sermon? To have people notice the wrongness of their ways and to hopefully make them turn around from their wicked behavior.
