Jefferson Elementary's K-5 Dual Language Immersion program brings together Spanish and English speaking students in an effort to develop full bilingualism in both groups. The Dual Immersion program celebrated its 12-year anniversary during the 2011-2012 school year. Enrollment is open to kindergarten and first grade students residing within the district's attendance boundaries and to students outside of the district, with permission from their neighborhood district. Participating students acquire knowledge in all academic subjects to either meet or exceed academic standards established by the state. Beginning in kindergarten, students receive 90% of instruction in Spanish and 10% in English. When students begin their fifth grade year, 50% of instruction is provided in English and 50% is offered in Spanish. Teachers often do a switch between teaching Spanish and English. For example, the teacher will speak Spanish half of the day and the other half of the day the teacher speaks English to the students

ISBN: 9780132685153 Interactionist theorists believe language is assisted by the child's caregiver or parent who influences child's language acquisition. Krashen believes that language is not learned but acquired. He created five hypothesis for which a child learns a second language. The first hypothesis is acquisition in which learning takes place with interactions with native speakers. The second hypothesis he formed monitor’s which is followed through time, grammar form, and knowledge of rules. The third hypothesis is natural order which is EL requires the rules of a language in predictable sequences. The fourth hypothesis is input which is direct result where the child is understanding the grammatical structures. The fifth hypothesis is affective filter in which is the level of the child's self-confidence and self-esteem. It is vital for a child to get reinforcement to maintain their self-esteem when learning a language. Another interactive theorist was Vygotsky who created ZPD and scaffolding. ZPD stands for zone of proximal development. This is when the child learns by being challenged but with support from a teacher. This is when scaffolding comes into play, as a future teacher using scaffolding during lessons will help English learners visually see the concepts being demonstrated. The last theorist is Cummins who explains student's age effect the learning of a second language. A student who receives instructions on their native language before learning a second language, is most likely to acquire the second language. This explains how the students Jefferson Elementary school will acquire English and Spanish through their schooling. This program seems to focus most on the culture because students use their primary language to learn all subjects in school. It helps ELs within the program because they have models of students that are English only in the program as well. Giving the students models to follow when hearing and speaking the language allows them to correctly develop the language.(b) How are EL students’ native languages included or considered? Are they considered (explain)? How about students’ native cultures?Are these recognized or respected? How can you tell? ELs native language is included throughout the program. They begin the program in kinder with 90% of the time learning in the spanish and 10% of the time learning in English. Native cultures are respected and recognized throughout the year. The school has an international festival every year where students proudly celebrate with dances and food of their culture. The school emphasizes being respectful, so students should learn to respect one another and their cultural background.

The goal of Jefferson’s Dual Immersion Program is to promote native like bilingualism and bi-literacy, achieve grade level academic achievement or higher, and encourage positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors in all students.

Teachers: The classroom teacher knows how to speak Spanish to their students for this Classroom teacher and yes, teacher needs to be bilingual and have their Bilingual Authorization certification.Students:(a) languages spoken at the school and percentages of students who speak them; Spanish is 57.7%, Vietnamese is 2.5%, Hmong, Russian, and Samoan are 0.1%, and all others are 0.7% for a total of 61.2%; the other 38.8% is English.
