Some well known characteristics of the hippo are its eyes, nose, and ears on top of its head. These features help the hippo, because when the hippo hears a noise it doesnt have to rise fully out of the water. Another characteristic is the hippos sharp teeth which they use to attack and fight other hippos.
A hippos gestation period is 243.5 days or about 8 months, and the babies usually weigh 50- 110 pounds!

Hippos inhabit most of Africa, they live in tropical regions in Sub- Saharan Africa. They usually tend to live in areas with many lakes and rivers.
Hippos are the third largest living land mammals. They can grow to 10.8 to 16.5 feet, and 5.2 feet tall. The average female weighs 3,000 pounds, while males weigh 4,000 to 9,500 pounds.
Hippos are the largest animal on the herbivore list. Their main diet is grass, for which they eat about 80 pounds a day! They also eat water plants, any type of vegtables they can find. Hippos sometimes attack and kill humans, but rarely enitrely eat them if they feel threatened.
Although hippos aren't extinct they are extremely vunerable. Their species have declined 7 to 20 percent in the last 10 years.
