Egypt was not the only place hieroglyphics were used, they were just the most famous there. The cultures of Mestopoamia, the Hittitties, and some of the South American cultures used them.

The Rosetta Stone was, basically, the key to deciphering hieroglyphics. In 1822, a Frenchman by the name of Jean- Francois Champollion used his knowledge of Greek and Demotic, two of the languages on the Stone, to decipher the third language, hieroglyphs. The Rosetta Stone was originally a message thanking the Ptolemy family for a donation.

HEIROGLYPHS

The Egyptians ruled in present-day Egypt from about 2700 BC to 300 AD. During some of this time, they used Hieroglyphs, otherwise known as Hieroglyphics. But, as with all cultures, after 300 AD, hieroglyphs were forever replaced when the Romans invaded Egypt. The last known hieroglyph was made in 394 AD.

The supposed creator of hieroglyphics was the Moon God Thoth. Hieroglyphs were so meaningful that the Greeks called them "hieroglyphika grammata" which means "sacred carved letters".
