Test Glog

We decided to use the electrical power subsystem found in the spacecraft bus of the James Webb Space Telescope. This system converts sunlight shining on the solar array panels into the power needed to operate the other subsystems in the bus as well as the Science Instrument Payload, according to jwst.nasa.gov. In our design, we would house solar-powered refrigerators within a “cool” structure. This structure would be shaped like the typical greenhouse, yet would serve the opposite purpose; the structure’s outer cover would be coated with the sunshield that the James Webb Space Telescope employs. We would use this sunshield to keep the inside of our structure cool; while the internal temperature would not be at a refrigeration level, it would allow the refrigerators work more efficiently, would serve as a protective buffer should the solar panels fail, and would provide an adequate temperature for medications that can be stored at room-temperature (80 degrees Fahrenheit in the United States). The refrigerators inside the structure itself would be powered by the solar panels on the exterior of the structure.

Here is an image of JWST's sunshield and a diagram explaining how it works.

Critera: Our spinoff must incorporate at least one specific technology from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and must solve a contemporary problem. Our spinoff also must be original! It will be most difficult to incorporate a state-of-the-art NASA technology into a spinoff made for daily use, while still keeping it affordable.Constraints: Our spinoff must be feasible, affordable, and portable.

Design Process

What is a spinoff technology? A spinoff technology is one that is based off of another technological element found in an already established invention. What JWST technology did we choose? The main JWST technology we chose is the sunshield. This sunshield, made of five thin layers of Kapton E with aluminum and doped-silicon coatings, reflects the sun’s heat.
