A fraction is part of a whole.The top number is the Numerator, it is the number of parts you have.The bottom number is the Denominator, it is the number of parts the whole is divided into.

Proper Fractions, Improper Fractions, Mixed Numbers, and Equivalent Fractions

A proper fraction is a fraction where the numerator (the top number) is less than the denominator (the bottom number).An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is greater or equal to the denominator: it is top-heavy.A mixed number is a whole number and a proper fraction combined.Equivalent fractions have the same value, even though they may look different.
