Constructivist Learning Theory"Knowledge construction is a process of thinking about and interpretting experience" (Newby et al., 2006, p. 35, para. 1).

FHS - Educational Technology Exposed!

NOTE: Review info about Learning theories and consider the pro's and con's of each style. 1. Constuctivisim is an excellent method to help make real world connections (reminder to self..check out note cards from class). This is currently the primary learning theory utilized in my classroom; due in part to connections with the real world, collboration, and the use of experts to further knowledge.2. Information Processing (IP) seems to be similar to constructivism but focuses on the internal (mental) organization of information to promote the theory that "learning is a change in knowledge stored in memory" (McGovern, 2001). Useful aspects of IP include (a) linking new information with existing knowledge and (b) using attention, encoding, and retrieval techniques to increase student achievement/knowledge. Point (a) is by far the most useful aspect of IP and I cannot see using this learning style as the driving force behind my curricular goals. 3. Would Behavorism be a better learning theory for the tech ed classroom?- how does it work? What are the primary considerations? Need more info (see chapter 2 in Newby (2006) text).- Behavorism suggests that learning objectives should be provided to the students (Note: District requires all FSD145 teachers to do this already)- Guide behavior with cues...? What is appropriate and was goes to far? Need to get students thinking about solving a problem...rather than waiting for a hint...?- On the positive side behaviorism uses a variety of technology integration techniques and exercises.Hmmmm....not sure this is a good option for my classroom and my instructional style even though components of the style are required by the district...need to keep looking.Based on the information I have reviewed, the constuctivist model most closely repesents my instructional and currcular goals for educating and preparing my 10th-12th grade technical education students. I will continue to review information on the other learning theories and will incorporate elements of each as appropriate.

Constructivist Learning Perspective- Knowledge constructed from experiences.- Collaborative environment with continuous reflection and experiences.- Teachers facilitate learning through modeling and guidance.Note: Instructional support provides:1. opportunities to solve realistic and relevant problems for student to gain knowledge;2. opportunities for group or collaborative activities;3. guidance to aid in the construction of student knowledge and understanding within the context of problem solving. (Newby, 2006, p. 27, table 2-1)Note: Technology integration within context of the contructivist learning.1. Provides an opportunity for collborative communication among educational stakeholders.2. Facilitates a realistic approach to "real world" problem solving activities through authentic educational experiences and devices. IMPORTANT!!! - The Constructivist theory requires students explore to gather knowledge and meaning. Nothing better than getting to play while we are in the process of learning! That ROCKS!

Digita Photography: An Exploration - a self-paced instructional tool.When used in class the actual *.ppt file, it is fully animated. Limited by the constraints of th "Glogster".
