Resources & Tools Subject:
An ecological house is modeled on the energy and material flows of natural ecosystems, and thus enhances rather than degrades the environment.A standard house, by contrast, is a resource sink. Life's essentials flow into it, are dissipated or degraded until useless, and are dumped off into the environment, sometimes as toxic waste.
Project Presentation:"Eco friendly" houses
We tested three types of decking for the outdoor living space: Cedar, pressure-treated decking, and composite decking.Cedar is rot-resistant and doesn’t absorb moisture. Our sample cedar decking was easily scratched and needed resealing, but didn’t warp when wet.Our pressure-treated wood decking was the cheapest option. It was very hard and not easily scratched, but shrunk and twisted when wet. Composite decking is made from recycled plastic and wood chips, contributing to recycling and decreasing deforestation. Our sample decking did not splinter or scratch, and was entirely waterproof.
We found that while composite decking is the most expensive option, it performed well under strenuous testing, meaning it will last longer than the other options. It is also made from recycled materials, making it the ideal material for use in an eco house.
