On April 128,1906 at 5:12 Eastern Standard time. An earthquake hit San Francisco, California.It ranked 8.3 on the Richter scale. On the Moment Magnitude scale it ranked 7.7-7.9. The epicenter has moved in the last 100 years. Most recently discovered to be in the Pacific Ocean, two miles west of San Francisco.
This earthquake was felt in southern Oregon, south of Los Angeles, and central Nevada.There was 8.2 billion dollars worth of damage.Over 225,00 people were left homeless. An estimated 3,000 lost their lifes.On April 20, 1906 the USS Chicago rescued 20,000 victims. This was one of the largest sea evacuations ever.
