There are two steps to digestion.Mechanical digestion: breaks down the food into smaller pieces by chewing in the mouth and in the stomach.Chemical digestion: breaks down food with chemicals. This begins in the mouth with saliva and continues in the stomach with bile and other gastric juices.
Digestive system is also called the alimentary canal. It is 30 feet or 6-9 meters long and runs from the mouth to the anus. The purpose of the digestive system is to break down food to make it into usable sugar for the cells to use in the process of respiration to make energy.
