Cannabis

Where it came from The drug cannabis comes from the cannabis plant, this plant can grow in any climate indoor, or outdoor. The plant tends to grow in tropical areas around the world, usually places like South and Central Asia. Generally, the soil that the cannabis plant grows in effects how many chemicals are in the plant. Cannabis was first used by the Chinese in 2727BC. The trend grew more popular and moved onto Ancient Greece. Later the Romans grew interest in the plant, this lead to the Middle East and North Africa. Cannabis spread to the west in 1545 and was used in Chile for its fibers. Today, cannabis is used all around the world and has many different purposes.

How its used In the 1500’s, the cannabis plant was used for making things. For example, it was used for its fiber and made into clothing, paper, hemp, rope and other things. Today, cannabis is used a lot differently! The plant can be dried up and rolled into cigarettes and gets smoked. The plant can be turned into oil and put into drinks. It can also be put into a powder form. This powder can be put into edible goods like cookies, brownies, and cake. People usually do this to take their mind off of their life and the struggles they might be going through. Cannabis can also take away pain, and is sometimes used for medical purposes. How its used In the 1500’s, the cannabis plant was used for making things. Who uses it most often The plant is most commonly used by people over the age of 12. 7.3% of 12 year old kids say they’ve used cannabis in the past month. The age of first use averaged out to around 17 years of age. The age that uses cannabis most is through the ages of 18-25 years of age. In total, about 2.5 million people use cannabis on a everyday basis, Thats around 4% of the entire adult population. Thats a lot considering the plant is illegal in most countries around the world. But the numbers go up everyday so I wouldn’t be surprised is it changes in a decade.

Negative legal consequences In Canada the possession of cannabis is strictly illegal. Many people assume there are certain amounts that are illegal. This is actually incorrect. The possession of cannabis itself (without any prescriptions) you will be faced with charges or in some cases instant arrest. This applies if you are the buyer, OR the seller.

Substitutes for the substance Believe it or not, there are many substances like cannabis that give off the same effect and are legal. For example, Dronabinol. Dronabinol is commonly used for medical purposes, usually treating nausea. It isn’t used too often because of the side effects that come with it. Just like cannabis, you will get ‘high’, hallucinations, anxiety, weakness. It also comes with dizziness, stomach pain, unusual thoughts, and confusion. The same effects of cannabis is given off, but the symptoms aren’t as strong. (And its legal!)

Where can you go for help Sometimes, people can get too addicted to cannabis. They may feel like they have to support but they are wrong! In Ontario, they have many phone lines and companies to help get rid of the addiction. Phone lines like, Drug and Alcohol line, and numerous government-made lines that you can trust. If that doesn’t appeal to you, or someone you know, the least that can be done is going to talk to a local doctor or pharmacist. There are many more, you just have to find out what's right for you!

Street names Throughout the 21st century people have changed the name, cannabis to make their own names. The most common one is, ‘Marijuana’. Marijuana means ‘Mary’ and ‘Maria’ when translated from Spanish to English. Some slang also comes from the name Marijuana. For example, Mary Jane, MJ, Jolly Green and Aunt Mary. Most of the other names come from the concept of the drug being a plant. For example, weed, hash, herb, and greens. Others and unknown for how they got named. For example, pot, dope, hotch, reefers, joints, brew, hot stick, poach, skunk and many many more. These street names refer to all the different forms of cannabis.

Long Term Effects Cannabis can be used for medical purposes, but there is a caution. There are many dangerous long term effects. If you're a kid using the drug, its very harmful. You will develop a permanent growth disorder, which means your body will grow at a very slow rate. Your immune system will weaken, making you more prone to common illnesses such as, colds, and fevers. Its proven to be harder to focus and concentrate and it also comes with the inability to understand things. All these effects will stay with you all your life if you do cannabis.

Short term effects The short term effects of cannabis all revolve around the idea of being really jumpy and sensitive. For example, smoking a joint can make you really panicked. Anxiety also comes with it. You may be worried about something you have to finish, and then be completely fine the next hour. Thats another short term effect, mood swings. Your heartrate will also rapidly go up. This may not seem like a big deal, but it is. It increases the risk of a heart attack. Heart attacks are very dangerous and most-times lead to instant death. Sensory distraction, low reaction time, and bad coordination to movement are also short term effects.
