Asprochaliko Paleolithic Site

Asprochaliko is a rare Paleolithic rock-shelter in Epiros, Greece

Artifacts~ Over 500,000 flaked stone tools and fragmented animal bones~ Bone evidence indicates that migrated herds of red deer, elk, and rhinoceros were hunted by Nomadic tribes

This rock shelter was a dwelling place and was in use 100,000 ya. Nomadic hunters followed animal herds through the mountains and most likely took shelter here.

Excavation~ 1964-1966~ Stratified~ Evidence of Mousterian tool traditions in lower layers~ Upper Paleothilic layers above~ 6-meter sequence (roughly 20 ft)
