Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Assessments- The assessment for the lesson on rounding fraction will be the completed index cards from the closing.- The assessment for the lesson on adding like fractions will be the pie charts that the students will create in the generalize section of this concept formation lesson.- The assessment for the lesson on subtracting like fractions will be the work they show using the 1/10 fraction tiles in the generalize section of this concept formation lesson.- The assessment for the lesson on adding unlike fractions will be their completed worksheet using the fraction wheel manipulatives. This worksheet is used with the manipulatives activity in the expansion section of this learning cycles lesson.- The assessment for the lesson on subtracting unlike fractions will be the foldable from the expansion section of this learning cycles lesson.

Objectives- Students will use their prior knowledge of number lines and benchmark fractions, such as 1/2, to round fractions.- Students will be able to define key vocabulary from the unit, including: factors, greatest common factor, least common denominator, mixed numbers, and multiples.- Students will continue their exploration of fractions by learning to add like fractions and solve word problems involving the addition of like fractions.- Students will continue their exploration of fractions by learning to subtract like fractions and solve word problems involving the subtraction of like fractions.- Students will use prior knowledge of modeling to learn how to use models to subtract unlike fractions and solve word problems involving the subtraction of unlike fractions. - Students will use prior knowledge of modeling to learn how to use models to subtract unlike fractions and solve word problems involving the subtraction of unlike fractions.

Introduction This mathematics learning unit teaches students to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators, inlcuding mixed numbers. The students will also learn to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole. This unit requires students to make sense of problems and work to solve them, use quantitative and abstract reasoning, develop reasoning and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematical tools, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Instructional PlansLesson 1- The teacher will use direct instruction to demonstrate rounding fractions using number lines.Lessons 2 and 3- The students will participate in concept formation lessons on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.Lessons 4 and 5- The students will participate in concept formation lessons on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

ReflectionsTeaching this unit on fractions helped me to see how important differentiation in teaching techniques is on effective learning. Some of the students in my host class responded more to technology, some to visual aides, and others to repitition and building on prior instruction. I tried to incorporate a lot of movement breaks and art into my unit plan because those are the strategies that seem to be the most effective with the students in my host classroom that have the most difficulty focusing on learning.

ConclusionI believe that this teaching unit was successful. However, I am still working on how to maintain classroom management of the entire class while working with individual students and small groups of students. I appreciated the opportunity to review and edit my unit before I taught it because I was not as familiar with teaching learning cycles and concept formation as I am with direct instruction. I learned a lot about what the students wanted an expected from the pre-assessment and I was able to modify my unit based on their thoughts and needs. Things that I assumed were prior knowledge of fractions from the 4th grade needed to be re-taught and practiced in prder for the unit I taught to be effective.
