Back In Time

Tyrannosaurous Rex Temporal Range: Late Cretaceous, 67-65.5 Ma Kingdom: Animalia Class: Reptillia It was among the last non-avain dinosaurs to exist before the Cretaceuos-Paleogene extinction event. Tyrannosaurous was a bipedal cernivore with a massive skull balanced by a long, heavy tail. It was 40 ft. (12 m) long; 15 to 20 ft. (4.6 to 6 m) tall. Its strong thighs and long, powerful tail helped it move quickly, and its massive 5 foot long (1.5 meter long) skull could bore (to make a deep hole in something) into prey. Scientists believe this powerful dinosaur could eat up to 500 pounds (230 kilograms) of meat in one bite. T-rex lived in the forested river vallys in North America during the late Cretaceous period. It became extinct about 65 million years ago in the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction. TRex's serrated, conical teeth were most likely uaed to pierce and rip flesh, which it then ripped away with its brawny neck muscles. Its two fingered forearms could probably seize prey, but they were too short to reach its mouth. Fossils of T-Rex prey, including Triceratops and Edmontosaurus, suggests T-Rex crushed and broke bones as it ate, and broken bones have been found in its dung. Everything about this ferocious predator, from its thick, heavy skull to its 4 foot long (1.2 meter long) jaw, was designed for maximum bone crushing action.

Meglaodon Temporal Range: Late Oligocene-Early Pleistocene Size: Over 50 feet long Kingdom: Animalia Class: Chondrichtheyes Meglaodon chomped down on prey with a bite force of between 24,000 to 40,000 pounds (10,900 to 18,100 kilograms). It weighed up to 30 times more than the latgest great white. It could have crushed a small car. Meglaodon's killing strategy was to bite the tails and flippers off large whales, effectively taking out their swimming system. They dined on giant prehistoric turtles and whales.

Velociraptor Kingdom: Animilia Class: Reptillia Temporal Range: Late Cretaceous, 75-71 Ma Diet: Carnivore Size: 6 ft. (1.8 m) long When they cought up to prey, these predators likely brought them down quickly with a long, 3.5 inch (9 centimeter) retractable claw on each foot and a mouth full of sharp teeth. Velociraptor is known to have preyed on herbivores such as Protoceratops. One famous fossil immortalized the two species locked in a ancient fight to the death. Velociraptor was probably one of the moreintelligent dinosaurs, because it had a large brain in proportion to its body size. It was formidable on land and, as the name suggests, almost certainly covered ground quickly. Moving upright on two legs, they may have been able to reach speeds of 24 miles an hour (39 kilometers an hour). These dinosaurs were not fliers. There short forelimbs made liftoff impossible, though they may be the evloutionary remnants of ancient ancestor's flight-giving wings.
