Brahms was born 7 May 1833 in Hamburg in what is now Germany. He died 3 April 1897 in Vienna, Italy.

Brahms was an early Romantic Era composer, widely known for his ability to bridge the divide between the old classical style and the new German romantic school of composing both of which existed during his lifetime.

Some of Brahms's well known works: Brahms wrote music for symphony orchestra, piano, choir, and many concerti. Some of his most famous pieces are the Hungarian Dances, his Lullaby, and his Requiem

Many believe Brahms carried on a secret love affair with Clara Schumann, who was the wife of his good friend Robert Schumann.

Brahms is the first composer to ever make a recording of his own work, have recorded a shortened version of his Hungarian Dance No. 1 for a representative of Thomas Edison in 1889.
