John Steinbeck worked on nearby ranches and later with migrant workers on Speckles ranch, which is located in the Salinas Valley in California.

1.What dangers do pearl divers face? Pearl divers face many different dangers. Some dangers include drowning, the bends, sharks, hypothermia, decompression sickness, and malfunctioning diving equipment. 2.What kinds of people were pearl divers? Pearl divers were poor people who were discriminated against. They were hard working and daring individuals. 3.What kind of life did pearl divers live? Pearl Divers lived a tiring and dangerous life. They get up early and go looking for pearls all day. They then go to bed late because they spend all day in the ocean looking for pearls. They have to be aware at all times because they do not want anyone stealing their pearls. 4.How do pearl divers adapt their bodies to the ocean? Pearl divers adapt their bodies to the ocean by holding their breaths for long periods of time and by swimming underwater constantly at high pressure. 5.What are the bends? The bends are a form of decompression sickness that occurs when the pressure surrounding a person’s body drops too quickly. The bends usually come upon a diver when he or she resurfaces too quickly. 6.How is the quality of a pearl judged? To determine the quality of a pearl, the pearls size must be between the size of a pinhead, being the smallest, and a golf ball, being the largest. The pearl must be a round as possible. It is very rare for a pearl to be perfectly rounded. The best pearl color is white, but the pearl color can be white, gray-black, lavender, pink, orange, and many shades in between. The shine, or luster, of a pearl is the most important quality. The best pearl must be bright, sharp and distinct. The nacre quality is another judgment of the pearl. You want the pearl to have thick nacre. Another quality is the surface. You want the pearl to be spotless. You then want to match that pearl to another perfect pearl. If the pearl matches the other pearl you should buy the pearl because it is perfect.

John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 2011 in Salinas California. John attended Salinas High School and graduated in 1919. He then attended Stanford University in 1925, but graduated without a degree. John’s family is German and Irish. His grandfather was Johann Adolf GroBsteinbeck who shortened the family’s last name to Steinbeck. John’s family farm is located in Heiligenhaus, Germany. John Steinbeck’s father was John Ernst Steinbeck who served as the Monterey County Treasurer. Olive Hamilton was John’s mother and was a former school teacher. John and his mother shared a passion for reading and writing. John Steinbeck loved writing so he traveled to New York City to see if he can get his work published. He held many odd jobs to stay in New York City, but when he failed to get his work published he traveled back to California.

The Pearl was written by John Steinbeck in 1947.

John Steinbeck won the California Commonwealth Clubs gold medal with Tortilla Flat, which was written in 1935. The California Commonwealth Clubs gold medal honors exceptional literary authors of California. He also won the Pulitzer Prize with The Grapes of Wrath, which was written in 1939.The Pulitzer Prize is a U.S. award for achievements in newspaper, online journalism, literature, and musical composition. The Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to John Steinbeck in 1962. This prize is awarded annually to any author form any country for being the best in literature.

La Paz is located to the west of Mexico and is located in southern part of Baja California. La Paz is the capital of Baja California.

La Paz is a flat are with beaches and deserts. La Paz is built in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River. The bodies of water that surround La Paz include the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of California, as well as the Bay of La Paz. The Gulf of California is also known as the Sea of Cortez. There are four major mountain ranges. Sierra de Juarez and Sierra de la San Pedro Martir are in Baja California and are located far away to the north of La Paz. Sierra de la Laguna Mountains are to the south of La Paz while Sierra de la Giganta is north of La Paz. Both mountain ranges are nearby. The terrain of the area is varied. La Paz is mostly flat. The area rises as you travel north, south, and west due to the mountain ranges nearby.

1.What do they look like? Every scorpion has a head, eyes, a mouth, claws, eight legs, and a stinger. The scorpion uses it claws to grab its’ prey and to defend itself against predators. The stinger is used to inject poison into the prey to paralyze it so it will not run away. The eight legs of the scorpion allows it to move fast and to get power when attacking its’ prey. 2.Where do they live? Scorpions live in the northern hemisphere in deserts. Scorpions like to sleep in tight places such as shoes, gloves, folded towels, and walls of homes. 3.What do they eat? Scorpions eat other insects. The insect they mainly eat is crickets. Scorpions also eat small animals such as birds. If the scorpion cannot find food it will eventually eat another scorpion. 4.How do they hunt their prey? Some scorpions sit and wait for their prey to come to them and then they attack. Other scorpions hunt actively by searching for something to eat. 5.Are they dangerous to humans? Why or why not? Very few scorpions are deadly to humans. Some scorpions can kill a human with a single sting, but most have only enough venom to kill small insects. 6.What should people do if they encounter a scorpion? What if a person is stung? If a person encounters a scorpion they should run. If a person is stung by a scorpion you should first put an ice pack on the sting to keep the swelling down. Then you want to capture the scorpion, if it is possible to do safely. Then you want to go to the doctor. To avoid getting stung by a scorpion you want to avoid going places where they like to spend time such as junk piles, and wood piles. If you work with logs you want to wear gloves and before putting on your shoes you want to shake them out.

John Steinbeck’s novels explored the misfortune of poor families of Mexican-Americans. A theme that Steinbeck uses in most of his novels is Mexican workers traveling from Mexico to California.
