Cornelius Vanderbilt was born in 1749 in Staten Island, New York, and died in 1877. Early in his career, Vanderbilt owned a ferry business. He was a captain of a steamboat, which is where he got the name of Commodore. Then he started taking control of railroads around New York City. In 1869 he built Grand Central Station.
