Early interest in the Environment While in still at the Naval Academy, Cousteau had an incident that changed his life. While driving one night, his car spun out of control and he was severely hurt, his right arm paralyzed. He was then forced to drop out of aviation school, and was in physical therapy for several years. An officer had recommended swimming to regain motion in his arm. This advice put Cousteau’s life in a new direction. In summer of 1936 he began to spend all time possible at the beach. He used goggles to look underwater and then got an underwater camera to film fish.

Benefits to the environment Jacques Cousteau developed technology such as the aqualung, and it has had a great impact on life today. It has lead to great discoveries. It has also helped us better-see life underwater.
