Cathy Freeman

In 1992 she was the first Australian Aboriginal to represent Australia at an Olympics.

Cathy Freeman was born in Queensland. She won her first gold medal at school athletics when she was eight years old.

Cathy had the honour of lighting the flame for Sydney Olympics 2000 and she won a gold medal at the 400 metres race.

She suffered discrimination from white Australians. Once, after winning many races at primary school competitions, Cathy, who wasn't given a trophy , had to watch as the white girls she had beaten received trophies.
